Where the line is. Mainers First may also engage in political activity to the extent the law permits a 501(c)(4) organization, but that is not its primary purpose. Contributions are not earmarked for any candidate or election. Mainers First alone decides how its funds are used.
Your privacy. Mainers First does not publish its donor list and is not required to report donor names to the IRS. Two limits: contributions cannot be earmarked for any candidate or election, and contributions made for election purposes can become public under Maine law.
What to do about it
Three things you can do this month
Show up to one council or committee meeting and ask what a program costs and what it has accomplished.
Ask every elected official you meet whether they believe the government should run housing, energy, or health care, and listen for a straight answer.
